California State University Northridge’s campus made students aware of national eating disorder week by coordinated daily events, and activities that students were able to take part in. These events helped them become aware of eating disorders, women in the media and how it affects women today. I was lucky enough to sit down at one of the events advertised around campus, which showed the movie “Miss Representation.”

The movie informed the viewers of how women are portrayed in the media and how it has affected women at home, in the real world, and their jobs. It also stated how people learn from television more than any type of media. Television has made women the protagonists eluding sex appeal, which has caused them to not give off a good reputation, it has limited and degraded the worth of women.

Women in power have been degraded because they have been seen as “Toxic” or “negative”. The beautiful women in magazines, with the flawless bodies and perfect makeup have created the image women want to be part of. Women spent around 12,000 to 15,000 dollars in their lifetime on beauty products. A women in the movie said “Women are reaching for an unobtainable ideal of beauty.”

In the statistics given in the documentary stated that 65% of women have eating disorders, 17% inflicting self mutilation, 53% of girls are unhappy with the way they look at age 13 and 78% are unhappy with the way they look by the age of 17. The media is giving girls an image of what they think society wants them to look like, even people of average weight have a problem with the way they look.

The pictures I have taken is my way of giving a positive message to all the women out there showing them that they don’t have to be perfect. I had my friends hold messages and quotes that I hope will be inspirational and put a smile on a girls face. Watching the movie “Miss Representation” inspired me to be more active because now I am informed of women in the media and how negatively it has affected girls and women of all ages.

Social Media Panel

We would like to thank Jarritos for sponsoring us in our Social Media Panel.

Last Wednesday, CSUN Latino Journalist hosted a successful Social Media Panel in which they invited Social media and community editor from KPCC Kim Bui, USC Web Professor Robert Hernandez, NBC-LA Tech/Social Reporter Mekahlo Medina, and Stephen Chavez from Chavez Marketing and Communications. They discussed the advantages of having social media outlets, how to build a unique brand and about the impact of creating conversations with your audience.

During the event, many students tweeted tips under hashtags

Robert Hernandez, Paula Duran, Mekahlo Mediana, Brian De Los Santos, and Kim Bui

(#LatinoJournalists, #latism, and #socialmedia) that the panelists were saying. For those that were unable to attend the event, they used twitter to ask questions for the panelists and take part in the conversation.

Some tips given at the event were:

Robert Hernandez: Quality vs Quantity: You have to be 1st AND right. It is more important to be right then to be 1st and be wrong. Your reputation is valuable. You need to be credible for what you say.

Stephen Chavez: 30%-talk about yourself – 70% talk about things that relate to you and that may interest your audience. If you are talking only about yourself, you will bore your audience.

Kim Bui: In order to land a job in social media, you must not have typos and keep your accounts updated.

The event concluded with networking and more advice being given to the students.

We would like to thank everyone that attended and sponsored our social media panel on Wednesday! We would also like to thank the panelists that participated and helped make this event possible.  We really appreciate your time and your words of insight of social media that was spoken into our lives.

Television network mun2 brought “18 & Over” show filming to the California State University Northridge campus. “18 & Over” is a music show that counts down the hottest 18 videos of the week. CSUN was the place to promote “18 & Over” for the diversity of different cultures. Latinos being a big group on campus was a great way for Mun2 to connect with them. And so CSUN LJ was part of the team that helped Mun2 get acquainted with the campus. Diana Velasquez, secretary, and Yesica Lopez, treasurer, led the efforts to make Mun2 feel at home. Students were encouraged to take part in dance- offs, fitness challenges, pie eating contests, and music trivia challenges with the chance to win big cash prizes. Prizes included four $25 iTunes gift cards, $250 pre-paid Visa cards, sunglasses, and “18 & Over” t-shirts. Since Mun2 recently relocated to California, their goal is to visit university campuses to promote programming. Filming of the show will air Saturday March 17 at 12pm.
