Last Wednesday, CSUN Latino Journalist hosted a successful Social Media Panel in which they invited Social media and community editor from KPCC Kim Bui, USC Web Professor Robert Hernandez, NBC-LA Tech/Social Reporter Mekahlo Medina, and Stephen Chavez from Chavez Marketing and Communications. They discussed the advantages of having social media outlets, how to build a unique brand and about the impact of creating conversations with your audience.

During the event, many students tweeted tips under hashtags

Robert Hernandez, Paula Duran, Mekahlo Mediana, Brian De Los Santos, and Kim Bui

(#LatinoJournalists, #latism, and #socialmedia) that the panelists were saying. For those that were unable to attend the event, they used twitter to ask questions for the panelists and take part in the conversation.

Some tips given at the event were:

Robert Hernandez: Quality vs Quantity: You have to be 1st AND right. It is more important to be right then to be 1st and be wrong. Your reputation is valuable. You need to be credible for what you say.

Stephen Chavez: 30%-talk about yourself – 70% talk about things that relate to you and that may interest your audience. If you are talking only about yourself, you will bore your audience.

Kim Bui: In order to land a job in social media, you must not have typos and keep your accounts updated.

The event concluded with networking and more advice being given to the students.

We would like to thank everyone that attended and sponsored our social media panel on Wednesday! We would also like to thank the panelists that participated and helped make this event possible.  We really appreciate your time and your words of insight of social media that was spoken into our lives.

Meet the Clubs Day

On a hot September afternoon, CSUN Latino Journalists reached out to the CSUN community and welcomed students to the club. Dozens of curious students stopped by our booth to learn about the organization and our mission. We also had Luis Gomez from NAHJ stop by and greet new members. We’re glad to say Meet the Clubs was a total success and many new faces came back and are now members of the club. Check out the photos.

CSUN Latino Journalists go to Orlando!

Sixteen of our CSUN Latino Journalists traveled to the East Coast to attend the 29 Annual National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Multimedia and Career Expo in DisneyWorld Orlando. The convention offered workshops from various journalists and professionals around the country ranging in topics such as Spanish media, technology, social media, improvement in reporting skills and much more. By night, DisneyWorld, ESPN, ABC and countless of other companies/organizations hosted networking parties for the attendees to indulge after panels and workshops during the day.

For many of our members it was the first time they attended a NAHJ convention, let a alone one in the other side of the country. A major difference was the humid and hot weather from Florida that was present as soon as we stepped out of the Orlando International Airport. However, many said the trip was worth the weather endurance and cost for the skills they gained, the people they met and the full on experience. One of the perks from having the convention was the two free “2 park hopper” tickets DisneyWorld supplied to the journos that made the trip to Orlando.

Check out these photos from the various events held in Orlando. We hope you join us next time at UNITY 2012 in Las Vegas.

October 14th Meeting

Hello CCNMA/NAHJ Members, here is an update of what is currently going on

Great Success on Wednesday’s roundtable event with the Latina Reporters. Thank you to everyone who made it to the event!

Preparing another discussion panel on November 10, 2010

  • Were are planning another panel discussion that will focus on how the media portrays undocumented students. We will have a CHIRLA speaker as well as other special guests. The panel will include an opportunity for guests and students to critique. We will begin to advertise the event two weeks prior to the event. We’re hopping more people will attend so it is important members begin to spread the word. Alejandra will be shooting video on the day of the event.

Resumés Portfolios, and cover letters

  • Professor Retis is willing to look at resumes and cover letters to advise you on what to change.
  • Do not restate what is on your resume in your cover letter.
  • Make it interesting; personalize it.
  • www.wix.com is one of the websites recommended to create a layout for your portfolio.
  • All your work can be condensed into a portfolio you can begin to work on.
  • Always remember you are trying to convince the person that is reading your letter.

Elections for next semester:

  • We are getting ready to elect board members for the Spring 2011 semester.
  • A description of each position will be posted up shortly on the blog.
  • If you are interested in a position for next semester please let us know.
  • Elections will be held in December.

CCNMA

  • We are finalizing the last couple of steps to become recognized as the official CSUN chapter for CCNMA. Angela is will be contacting the people.

Shirts

  • We have finalized the design and took note of the size of the shirts for each member. If you would like a shirt, please text or email Angela your size. The shirts will be around $10 (maybe less) and we will pay out of our own pockets.

PR and Business Cards

  • Cynthia presented the idea of having booklets with NAHJ/CCNMA information about membership, what the organization is about and current contacts.
  • We will look into it further.
  • Martha and Angela will be covering the description.

Upcoming possible Fundraiser

  • Angela discussed the idea to have a fundraiser at a yogurt place called Menchie’s Yogurt. The fundraiser would last a whole week.
  • Date TBA

National Association of Hispanic Journalists Fall 2010 Meeting Dates

CCNMA/NAHJ CSUN Student Chapter is meeting every thursday from 10-11am  in Room MZ 212. Come join us to learn about the many opportunities NAHJ has to offer.

New Student Representative for NAHJ

Jacqueline Guzman is the new NAHJ Student Representative.

With only one goal in mind and the support of her friends and mentors behind her, Jacqueline Guzman is now the new Student Representative for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. As former President of CSUN’s own CCNMA/NAHJ club, Jackie has always been an advocate of taking advantage of the opportunities that organizations like NAHJ offer to young aspiring journalists; opportunities such as scholarships, internships, fellowships and much more. She has had the honor of being the recipient of countless scholarships such as the Maria Elena Salinas Scholarship, Geraldo Rivera Scholarship, and Ruben Salazar Scholarship. Jackie also participated in an internship at our nation’s capitol writing for the prestigious syndicated column, Hispanic News Link. Jackie is truly an inspiration to all CSUN alumni and one thing is for sure, her success will not end here. As she wrote in her own statement, Jackie is “a proud Ñ journalist” and on behalf of everyone in the club, we are all proud of her accomplishments and commitment with our club. Keep up the good work Jackie and remember ademas de ser Latina, tambien eres de CSUN.
